Looks like my prayers were answered. May
really was a month full of madness not just in England, but across Europe, too!
In this month alone, we actually saw some incredible matches that saw many
teams beat the odds and achieve the impossible. On top of this, this report
will cover two matches that aren’t part of the Premier League report, but
featured teams from the League playing in finals that got people talking, some
positive, some negative. Another thing this month… No, this season of the
Premier League will be remembered for is that the teams that won trophies all
have birds on their badges, or are nicknamed after a bird. So Liverpool,
Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Newcastle (despite having horses on their
logo, they’re nicknamed “The Magpies”) are the protagonists of this
season. Spurs, Newcastle and especially Crystal
Palace all ended their long trophy drought this season. So for the final report
of the season, we take a look at the best three matches of the month: One that
took place in Bilbao, the second that took place on Wembley, and the third one
that put one team into a position that qualified them for next season’s
Champions League!
A match that shocked everyone!
Everyone, including Palace, expected the
season to be completed in the middle of the League, with 0 trophies. After all,
this is the way of Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, on the other corner, this was a
chance for City to win a trophy, following an extremely disappointing season
(by City standards).
WHAT HAPPENED WAS SOMETHING THAT NO ONE
SAW COMING!!!
From the beginning, right until the end,
Palace were pressuring City all over the field. They had their moments of
“recharging the batteries”, but overall they were on par with City in terms of
endurance and strength.
The Eberechi Eze goal in the 16th
minute was perhaps the only necessary motivator for Palace to keep on attacking
and, dare I say, cock-block City from scoring a goal.
Manchester City had their first
opportunity to equalise in the 35th minute through a penalty, which
was awarded after their player Mitchell was tackled in the six-yard box. The
main star, Haaland, instead opted for Marmoush to take it. This decision proved
to be a costly, as Palace’s Dean Henderson (who was on fire throughout the
whole game), saved it with ease.
And just like the pen, City had their
chances, but couldn’t do much. Same for Palace.
BUT WHO CARES??? AFTER 140 YEARS, PALACE
WON THEIR FIRST EVER MAJOR TROPHY!!!
My
childhood club won against City in a final, and I am completely okay with that…
Originally I was going to say something
along the lines of despite the shit
season both teams had, this one trophy would at least give hope for the next
season.
The final was such a hot mess that even
with the Europa League trophy, the seasons for both clubs cannot be salvaged.
It was that shit!
Johnson’s goal in the 42nd
minute was the sole goal of the game, and it was scored in such a Looney Tunes
fashion… I just can’t write much about this game.
The only good thing that this game did
was made me fall asleep faster. So for that, I am thankful for the woeful
performance that was displayed by two of the worst teams this season. And this
is coming from a Man United fan.
Do you want to know what’s worse than
this? Spurs lost their final League game against Brighton 4-1, whilst United
won their match against Aston Villa 2-0, which prevented Villa from advancing
into a position that would automatically place them into the Champions League.
I have nothing else to add, other that I
had a good night sleep thanks to this bore-fest of a match.
And now for the team that managed to
grab a Champions League spot. They struggled for a while to maintain their
position, but in the end it paid off. A big congratulations to ARSENAL for
making it into the-
Nah, I’m just kidding, it’s Newcastle!
Arsenal got 2nd for the 3rd
season in a row. United may be crashing down and burning, but at the very least
we’re not smoking Arteta’s “trust the process” copium.
Newcastle’s season as all over the
place, and they had more downs than ups.
This was seen during their final game
against Everton, a team that had a very rusty few seasons in a row, but managed
to find their flow right at the very end.
For the most part, the final game of the
season between Newcastle and Everton was pretty much in favour of the “Toffees”,
who scored the only goal of the game in the 65th minute.
Despite their loss, Newcastle managed to
snag a spot for next season’s Champions League, as their last few games were
pretty decent, and as mentioned before, Aston Villa failed to win to get more
points and climb to 5th.
FINAL STANDINGS
This season was truly the “Underdog”
season, with teams winning big against all odds. Liverpool, were from the very
beginning (from around matchweek 10 to be exact) favoured as champions of
England. City proved to be a challenge, but after that game against
Arsenal, where Haaland decided to share his wisdom with Arteta, they got HUMBLED really
good. And Arsenal just did a 2020s Arsenal.
The real highlight was the fight for
spot in Europe. Chelsea and Newcastle got Champions League, Aston Villa got
Europa League and Nottingham Forest got Conference League.
AND SOMEHOW 17TH PLACE SPURS GOT
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!!!
United were disastrous. Only a miracle
could help this club escape the curse it currently has.
This isn’t the end though. The final
football report of the 2024/2025 season will go live on May 31st, as
it will cover the final game of the Champions League, Inter vs. PSG. Stay
tuned!
Until Saturday,
