PREMIER LEAGUE 23/24 MONTHLY REPORT - AUGUST

At long last, the new season is here. Waiting throughout the hot and agonizing summer was worth it, as now we can watch the world’s greatest football league right in front of us (or with the mates down at the pub or the betting shop).

But as this is the new season, new faces have entered the League. I’d like to give my personal “Welcome to the Big leagues” salute to the following promoted teams: BURNLEY, SHEFFIELD UNITED AND LUTON TOWN. I am particularly fond of Luton, as they are unique in the sense that their home ground, Kenilworth Road, can only hold a total of 10,356 people. Compared to the other stadiums in the Prem, that’s pretty small, but the atmosphere is perhaps the best. Houses surrounding the ground, fans being able to hear each other sneeze and being able to throw banters at one another. It’s beautiful stuff.

Another thing that’s new for this season is Manchester United’s squad. After 12 years of service, David De Gea is no longer part of the team and is currently a free agent. In his place, its Inter’s former stopper André Onana, who moved to Old Trafford on a deal worth £43.8 million. Wearing the number 24 on his back, a number that fans of United recognise as Daren Fletcher, another United bloke that is well liked within the fans of the Red Devils.

He has the spirit and determination, but brother really likes to bounce around for some reason. He's a bit confused, but he's a fighter...

Now onto the reporting of the month. Originally my new idea for the reports is going to be the following: take the best matches of that month, regardless of which matchweek it is, and analyse them briefly while also commenting about the performance for said month. And because we are back in the Champions League, that section will also receive a different style of reporting. My main issue right now is that August’s best matches all happened during matchweek 3, so my whole report on August will be covering those matches only. To be honest it was a banger of a matchweek, we saw lots of action drama, and excitement from both sides of the supporters, and those that watched the games and support neither club that played.

Intro done, now let’s move on to the show…

ARSENAL VS FULHAM

The first fixture of this report was between the London sides. It was played in the North, but neither side could prove which one had it in to earn the title of Greater. That was a shit pun that is deserving of a red card.

Andreas Pereira opened the game within the 1st minute of the match. A shot from outside the box right into the left corner and everyone was cheering. Everyone but Gunners.

69 minutes later, Saka equalised in the 70th minute, which was followed by Eddie Nketiah in the 72nd, with an assist from Fábio Vieira.

In the 83rd minute, red card received Calvin Bassey. He was already on a yellow from before, but this one was his second, so unfortunately, the lad was sent off. It didn’t stop Fulham to equalize in the 87th minute and keep the match in high spirits. Sadly, it ended with a draw, and a spectacular performance from both sides, albeit Arsenal were slow in the start, and Fulham were on full throttle the entire time…

BRENTFORD VS CRYSTAL PALACE

My childhood club versus a side that is pretty much awesome at the minute.

Lots of chances were shared between the two teams in both halves, but Brentford took the lead in the 18th minute, thanks to Kevin Schade and Christian Nørgaard, with the latter marking down an assist for the match. The score was 1-0 all the way up to the 76th minute, when Joachim Andersen broke the tension of the match, with an assist from Jordan Ayew.

No winners in the first two matches, but lots of competitiveness nonetheless…

EVERTON VS WOLVERHAMPTON

I kind of forgot that Everton are in the Prem. With what happened last season, I forgot they survived relegation day.

Lots of yellow cards, on Wolverhampton’s side the most, with a total of 4.

I do feel bad for the Wolves, because they have been playing pretty good football the last couple of months. They’re kind of like the underdogs of the league, or should I say underwolves… I’ll euthanize myself for that one once this is published.

As for the game itself, Sasa Kalajdzic, with an assist from Pedro Neto, scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute. The cross from Pedro + the attempt from close range = WINNING GOAL.

The rest is just everyone else laughing because Everton. Absolute shite of a club at the minute…

MANCHESTER UNITED VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST

This match was long and tense, just like the names of the teams.

The first 4 minutes of the game were hell for us United fans, as we managed to concede 2 bloody goals in the opening seconds of the game. First from Taiwo Awoniyi in the 2nd minute, followed by Willy Boly in the 4th. The 2nd goal was pure luck as the ball deflected from the player and ended at the back of the net.

Christian Eriksen tried to calm things down with him finding the back of the net in the 17th minute, but it wasn’t enough to shut everyone up, who jumped on the “make fun of United” bandwagon for the rest of the first half.

As soon as the second rolled out, United were more confident and more stylish in their play. In the 52nd minute Casemiro equalized the score and Bruno nailed the win for us in the 76th minute from the spot in the six yard box. Cool as a cucumber, we made a comeback and got ourselves the 3 points.

And Nottingham went home with two Ls: first is for the game and the second is for Joe Worrall, who received a red in the 67th minute for a bad challenge…

LIVERPOOL VS NEWCASTLE

What a way to end the monthly report. The castle couldn’t keep up against the attacks that were coming from the Scousers. They never walk, nor attack alone.

Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon scored the first in the 25th minute, which was quickly forgotten because 3 minutes later, Virgil van Dijk received a red card. This was quite unusual, as he is a defender that’s known for not being aggressive with his challenges.

However, as the match went on, Liverpool were desperate and in the need of a miracle to make an equalizer. Their prayers were answered, as Darwin Núñez came to deliver Liverpool from the hands of defeat. In the 81st minute he gave them hope, and in stoppage time, with the help from Mohamed Salah, delivered them to victory.

Crippled and underwhelmed, and possibly against all odds, they managed to pull off a magnificent win, whereas Newcastle crashed and burned, causing them to take a huge fat L, drop points and position in the League…

STANDINGS

Closing remarks regarding the opening month:

- City won 3 games out of 3

- West Ham are somehow 2nd

- Spurs are adapting without Kane in the squad

- Vincent Kompany's Burnley will have to work a bit harder than before.

- Tesla make good TVs. Just wanted to mention that

Until next time
